14 October 2012: Al Hidd defeated Al Najma 51-31 yesterday for a
brilliant start in the Bahrain Women's Basketball Championship, part
of the first-ever Bahrain Women's Games.
The inspired Al Hidd side mounted big fightback on the way to clinching the win ion this five-team event, being held at the Bahrain Disabled Sports Federation Gym near the National Stadium in Isa Town. Al Najma took an early 8-7 lead in the first period with inspired performances from Ruqaya Al Shamma'a, Noor Nabhan, Amani Saleh, Iba'a Khamis, Noor Al Dossary and Fatma Ali.
But Al Hidd, coached by Hamad Ali, fought back to take control of the second quarter, which ended in their favour 17-5 for a 24-13 overall lead at half-time.
Then it was Al Najma's return who managed to reduce the deficit to eight points at the end of the third and penultimate stage, thanks to contributions from Alya Ali, Dalal Al Sayed Ali, Sara Abdulaziz , Maryam Al Ka'abi and Maryam Al Hamer.
However, Al Najma could do little to stop a gallant Al Hidd team, who showed superior performance with high pace and efficiency play to stretch their lead back to 20 points at full-time.
The victors were represented by Najya Burshaid, Maryam Nasser, Wasan Nabeel, Hessa Jaber, Mooza Al Mansoori, Sumaya Al Hashmi, Maryam AlJaber, Aseel Mohammed, Dana Al Qadi and Mai Al Khal.
The event, which concludes on October 31, also features teams from Manama, Muharraq and Al Ahli clubs.
Action continues today when Manama, coached by Fadel Milad, take on Hussain Nabeel-coached Al Ahli at 4pm. The first round of the basketball tournament features single round robin matches, with the top four teams progressing into the semi-finals that will be played in knock-out format.
In the semi-finals, the top seed team takes on the fourth, while second seed team encounter the third-placers in single elimination matches to set up the title showdown. The semi-finals losers will vie for the bronze medal.
The Games is being organized by the Supreme Council for Women (SCW) in co-operation with the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC).
The opening ceremony was attend by SCW vice-president Shaikha Maryam bint Hassan Al Khalifa, deputizing for Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty King Hamad and SCW President.
